Overview - National Conservation Leadership Institute Print E-mail
One of the most far-reaching development initiatives ever undertaken within the natural resource conservation community, the NCLI is an intensive, world class leadership development experience presented each year to a select group of 36 identified future leaders in conservation, encompassing federal, state, local, tribal, not-for-profit, and corporate organizations. Crossing such organizational boundaries, the Institute will provide each cohort of participants, referred to as Fellows, with a valuable professional network necessary to build upon past conservation successes and prepare for the future.

The Institute features a unique approach to instruction. Instructors from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government connect principles of adaptive leadership in tandem with renowned natural resource leaders presenting numerous case studies “from the trenches.”

Examples of principle objectives are:

  • Developing an adaptive conservation leadership mindset for the future
  • Fostering the power of working together
  • Promoting emotional intelligence and interpersonal relationships
  • Strategies for accomplishing deep change
  • Distinguishing technical problems from adaptive challenges
  • Developing the adaptability to thrive in complex, competitive and challenging environments

Program Highlights:

  • Two months of mental pre-work consists of instructor-directed reading, analysis and electronic discussion of selected material.
  • A 10-day instructional residency in November at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s prestigious National Conservation Training Center in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. Learning is facilitated through an appropriate mix of experiential and knowledge-based learning, e.g., classroom, panel discussions, small group exercises, field-trips, and team projects.
  • Individual projects follow return to work with each Fellow developing a solution to a current natural resource issue/problem to be competitively presented and reviewed at the full Institute during the final weekend in the spring.
  • A final extended weekend at Big Cedar Lodge in Missouri brings together sponsors, instructors and fellows for an unforgettable culminating experience.
