Leadership, management, and supervision are topics that are easily confused and often have different meanings to different people. The online course “Leader as Supervisor” looks at the convergence of these three concepts and provides practical approaches so that supervisors can more effectively manage their programs and exercise leadership at the same time. One of the courses basic principles is that it is best to manage systems, not people. How can a supervisor be most effective functioning in this paradigm? Supervisors will be most effective by understanding and practicing leadership.
Participants in “Leader as Supervisor” will examine leadership and management styles, explore human motivation from both theoretical and applied perspectives, learn how to be more effective delegators, and look at practical ways to address positive employee discipline. Understand common definitions of the concepts of leadership, management, and supervision and how the concepts are related to each other. Understand employee motivation and its importance to supervisors Understand effective delegation Understand how to impact positive employee discipline
This course is conducted online over six weekly segments. Participants will typically spend about 5 hours each week on coursework. Participants will be expected to read the assignments and post discussion ideas by Wednesday of each week. Comments on other classmates’ postings are due by Friday at midnight and all exercises, papers, etc. are due by midnight on Sunday of each week. |
