Recently, an historical precedent took place for state fish and wildlife agencies across the country. In 2004, the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies Leadership and Professional Development Committee initiated a leadership development program-building effort. Partly in response to a number of surveys and forecasting trends foretelling of an eminent loss of senior management in our agencies across the country, and partly because it just made good sense. The initiative was directed to the Management Assistance Team to develop a customizable program template and tools as soon as possible. |

The agency’s senior leadership must ask and get answers to the nine key questions listed below before going any further toward implementing a leadership development program. These nine key questions were developed by the Management Assistance Team over a decade of helping state fish and wildlife agencies implement their leadership efforts.
