The National Conservation Leaderhsip Institute is the Nation's conservation "War College" for the highest potential future leaders. Housed at the National Conservation Training Center in Shepherdstown, WV, this 10 month program will bring the best-of-the-best from state, federal, and private conservation organizations to learn leadership from nationally known, top leadership teachers including Marty Linsky, co-author of "Leadership on the Line," Meg Wheatley, author of "Leadership and the New Science, and others.

We are facing a crisis in conservation!

It is the significant loss of leadership in the organizations which manage the conservation of our nation’s natural resources. A solution requires immediate and careful attention.

Research studies confirm this reality:

  • Almost half of our leadership in state fish and wildlife agencies will retire within five years, and within the next 8 years we will lose 77% of senior leadership!

  • More than one-half of Senior Executive Service employees of federal natural resource agencies will retire by 2007!

  • And this alarming trend mirrors that of NGOs and corporate sectors.

Overview - National Conservation Leadership Institute Print E-mail
One of the most far-reaching development initiatives ever undertaken within the natural resource conservation community, the NCLI is an intensive, world class leadership development experience presented each year to a select group of 36 identified future leaders in conservation, encompassing federal, state, local, tribal, not-for-profit, and corporate organizations. Crossing such organizational boundaries, the Institute will provide each cohort of participants, referred to as Fellows, with a valuable professional network necessary to build upon past conservation successes and prepare for the future.

The Institute features a unique approach to instruction. Instructors from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government connect principles of adaptive leadership in tandem with renowned natural resource leaders presenting numerous case studies “from the trenches.”

The Institute inspires, enriches, prepares and ensures conservation leaders for tomorrow. Criss-crossing organizational boundaries, participants form professional networks from federal, state, local, tribal, not-for-profit, and corporate organizations – networks with the capacity to build upon past conservation successes and prepare for the future.
